Are you certain? God

Bob Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. (2 Cor 13:5 NIV)

Let nothing satisfy you until, by the infallible witness of the Holy Spirit bearing witness with your spirit, you are certified that you are a child of God. Do not trifle here. Let no "perhaps" or "if" or "maybe" satisfy your soul. Charles Spurgeon, Morning by Morning (21 May)

Please do not trifle with your salvation! This is a matter on which you cannot afford to be wrong. You are not saved because you had an emotional experience or did good things or belong to a church or prayed a prayer or were baptized in water. Those are merely outward signs of a supernatural Holy Spirit event which (everyone hopes) occurred inwardly.

We are commanded (2 Cor 13:5) to examine the condition of our souls in the light of God's Word. If you are saved, God wants you to have assurance of your salvation - His Spirit bearing witness with your spirit. If you are merely "playing church," on the other hand, God wants you to realize your true condition and make things right. Here are some signs from God's Word, so you can know for sure whether your salvation is genuine or not. At the top of God's list are obedience and love.

Obedience – Jesus repeatedly says that the foremost sign of being His child is a willingness to obey Him.

“Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father in heaven. (Matt 7:21).

Agape Love – The Bible tells us that if you have unconditional agape love, rejoice! It is a sign that you are God’s child.

Everyone who loves (agape) has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love (agape) does not know God, because God is love (agape). (1 John 4:7-8 NIV)

Change - A genuine encounter with God is always life-changing. Therefore, if you are saved you will see genuine progress and positive changes in your character.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. (Gal 5:24 NIV)

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone; the new has come. ( 2 Cor 5:17)

Discipline – If God zaps you from time to time, it doesn’t mean that you are a failure. It means that you are His child, because . . .

The Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son. (Heb 12:6 NIV)

The Holy Spirit – Eph 1:14 says that the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of your future in Heaven. The Greek word translated as guarantee in this verse is arabonna, the modern Greek word for “engagement ring.” Wow!

Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance. (Eph 1:13-14 NIV)

Hunger for God’s Word – God’s children are hungry for God's Word. It makes sense to them, because the Holy Spirit lives inside of them.

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, because they are foolishness to him and he does not understand them. (1 Cor 2:14 NIV)

Persecution – Persecution for your faith is another sign that you are living for God.

In fact, everyone who wants to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. (2 Tim 3:12)

The Bottom Line - We will be surprised by some of the people we see in Heaven, and also by some of the people that we do not see there (Luke 13). Please don’t take a chance on your eternity! 99% certain is not good enough! If you are unsure of your salvation, please set your pride aside and make things right this very moment. Your Heavenly Father will be delighted! So will all those who truly love you!

Make your calling and election sure. (2 Pet 1:10 NIV)
