The Only Thing of Value

"The only thing of value you have to share with anyone else is what I have done for you."

The ability to discern spirits comes only from Me. God

Bob Rev 3:17 You say, "I am rich. I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing." But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked."

You may not believe in blessings and curses, but God does. The Bible is full of them. Parents pass down their spiritual DNA to their children in the form of blessings and curses. No family is entirely free from curses because no family is entirely free from iniquity. To some degree, each of us is a victim and each of us is a carrier . . . handing down dysfunctional behaviors from one generation to the next.

Ex 3:20 - For I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and fourth generation.

The Hebrew word translated as "iniquity" in Exodus 3:20 doesn't mean a one-time sin. It refers to a habitually contaminated or polluted area of life. Everyone is familiar with the way that dysfunctional behaviors are handed down from parent to child. Examples include poverty, bad marriages, anger, sex sin, suicide, alcohol and drugs, depression, abuse, and unforgiveness. For every sinful tendancy of our fallen human nature, there are demonic spirits that seek to amplify the expression of that sin. When iniquity takes root in a person's life, Satan assigns a familiar spirit(s) to the family to encourage the continued practice of the the sin and to pass it down to the next generation. Jesus says, "The truth will set you free." But persons afflicted by a generational curse are almost always in denial of the truth.

Denial is the means by which iniquity is passed down from one generation to the next.

Tear Down Strongholds

Demonic spirits build what is called a stronghold - a network of attitudes and false beliefs that perpetuates the dysfunctional / sinful behavior and blinds the person to the reality of what is going on. Strongholds are founded upon a lie from the devil. Once implanted into your soul, the enemy of your soul manipulates circumstances and your perceptions thereof in order to generate false "evidence" that continually reinforces the stronghold. Normal means of help such as counseling, psychiatrists, and doctors are generally ineffective in dealing with demonic strongholds, because you can't fight a spiritual war with weapons of the flesh (2 Cor 10:4-6). If left untreated, they can persist for a lifetime. Three clues are:

  1. History - The same dysfunctional behavior occurred in a previous generation(s) of your family.
  2. Persistence - The problem is persistent and does not respond to normal means of help.
  3. Denial - There is outright denial, or defense of the wrong behavior as normal and acceptable.

Gears Rarely does one dysfunctional behavior exist in isolation. As indicated by the picture to the right, dysfunctional behavior / generational curses usually involve several factors working together as a stronghold. That is why they can be so difficult to eradicate. You owe it to yourself, your children, and your grandchildren to break every generational curse that affects you and your family. It is basically a three-step process to deal with the sin, the evil spirits, and the stronghold.

  1. Sin - is dealt with when we confess and repent of it.
  2. Evil Spirits - are dealt with when we command them to leave in Jesus' name.
  3. Strongholds - are dealt with when we replace wrong attitudes and beliefs with Godly ones.

Learn from the Good Example of Others

Very few of us had a perfect upbringing. If your parents didn't teach you how to manage your money, or how to have a good marriage, or control your anger, or deal with unforgiveness, etc. . . . you can count on God to put the good example you need in your pathway. He will point you to people who have learned to successfully deal with whatever issue you are struggling with. God expects you to pay attention to these good examples and learn.

It's not your fault if you didn't have a good example growing up. But it is your fault if you refuse to learn from the people around you.

Hold Onto Your Deliverance

If you don't know how to hold onto your deliverance, it will be taken from you.

We all know people who have been wonderfully delivered from a bad circumstance, only to fall right back into it just a short time later. If you do not replace the stronghold by Godly beliefs, you leave the door wide open for the same evil spirits to re-enter. They are bad tenants who won't pay the rent and who will only trash your house. Jesus warns us

Matt 12:43-45 - When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, "I will return to the house I left." When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.

Now is the time to get free.

When the first warm days of spring come, we like to give our homes a major cleaning. Out come the brooms, the mops, and the scrub brushes. At first we think that our home merely needs a quick touch-up. But the more we clean, the more hidden dirt and trash we find. What we thought would take a single hour ends up taking the entire day. But the final result is a clean home to live in. The same is true for our souls. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to give us a thorough cleaning . . . to free us from every area of bondage and dysfunction. Now is the time to get free! Deliverance is not just for big issues. It is for every besetting sin, big or small. Ask God to reveal everything that trips you up and prevents you from being the person He intended you to be.

Therefore, if the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed! (John 8:36 NIV)

I hear the Lord urging His people, "Now is the time to get free!" Yet countless Christians continue to live in bondage to sin and generational curses. One day I asked the Lord point blank, "Why don't more people get free?"

Too proud to confess their sin
Too proud to come to Me
Too proud to reach out to others for help

Only by Revelation

Discernment of spirits is one of the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12). God wants us to be aware of the enemy's schemes (2 Cor 2:11). But for the most part, Christians in the western world are unaware of demonic activity. "Why such blindness, Lord?"

The ability to discern spirits comes only from God.
